How each calculator works
Ten calculators,
in plain words.
Each one answers a question a trader asks before or during a trade. Pick one above, change the inputs, and the result updates as you type.
Commission calculator
Shows the commission on a trade, charged once when you open it and once when you close it.
Formula: contract size × lots × price gives the notional value. Divide by 100,000, multiply by the commission per side, then by two for the round trip, and convert into your account currency.
Margin calculator
Shows the margin your broker holds to open a position at a given leverage.
Formula: price × lots × contract size, divided by the leverage, converted from the quote currency into your account currency. At 1:100, one lot of EUR/USD at 1.1000 needs USD 1,100.
Multi target calculator
Helps you plan how much of a position to close at up to three target prices. It shows the profit at each target, the total, and the return against the risk to your stop loss.
Formula: for each target, (target price − open price) × lots closed × contract size, reversed for a sell. Return to risk is the total profit divided by the loss if the whole position hits the stop.
Pivot point calculator
Turns the previous period’s open, high, low and close into a pivot level with support and resistance around it, using the Classic, Woodie, Camarilla and DeMark methods.
Formula (Classic): pivot = (high + low + close) ÷ 3. Resistance 1 = 2 × pivot − low, support 1 = 2 × pivot − high. The other methods weight the close differently.
Profit and loss calculator
Shows the profit or loss on a trade from its open and close prices, its direction and its size.
Formula: (close price − open price) × contract size × lots for a buy, or (open − close) for a sell, converted into your account currency.
Fibonacci calculator
Calculates the retracement levels between the high and the low of a move, for an uptrend or a downtrend.
Formula: in an uptrend, level = high − (high − low) × ratio. In a downtrend, level = low + (high − low) × ratio. The ratios are 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6%.
Pip value calculator
Shows what one pip is worth on your position, so you know how much each move in price costs or earns.
Formula: pip size × contract size × lots, converted from the quote currency into your account currency. One lot of EUR/USD is worth USD 10 a pip; one lot of USD/JPY is worth 1,000 yen a pip.
Swap calculator
Estimates the overnight financing on a position held for a number of days, for long and short positions. Swap can be a cost or a credit.
Formula: number of days × swap per lot × lots, converted into your account currency. Swap rates are set by your broker, so enter theirs.
Position size calculator
Tells you how many lots to trade so that, if your stop loss is hit, you lose only the share of your balance you chose to risk.
Formula: amount at risk = balance × risk percentage. Lots = amount at risk ÷ (distance to the stop × contract size × conversion rate).
Currency converter
Converts an amount from one currency into another at the current exchange rate.
Formula: amount × exchange rate. When there is no direct rate, it uses the inverse pair or a cross through a major currency such as the US dollar.
